Indonesian Day

On Monday, 28th of October, grades 1 – 6 of the German School Jakarta celebrated Hari Indonesia. Of course, all students came in Batik and/or Kebaya encim and were very curious about that what will happen. This year, we had the topic “Betawi”. Therefore, we worked together with Sanggar Tari Ayunda Puspita to invite dance instructors to introduce us to Betawi dances and the tradition of “Ondel-Ondel” with Ondel-OnDoel Kenari.

Ondel-Ondel is a large puppet figure featured in Betawi folk performance of Jakarta. These puppets are an icon of Jakarta. Ondel-Ondel is utilized for livening up festivals or for welcoming guests of honor, usually in pairs. Ondel-Ondel is one of a few Indonesian folk performances that has survived modernization and is still being regularly performed.

After our workshop, we had a great performance from all the different dances in the auditorium:

Tari Sim sim, Tari kembang jatuh, Tari Nandak, Tari Ondel ondel, Tari  jali jali, Tari renggong manis, Tari nandak ganjen / kinang kilaras, Tari sirih kuning, Tari lenggang nyai, tari ngarojeng.

The students made their performance very enthusiastically and everybody gave them a big applause.

After the show, they received souvenirs for their efforts and enjoyed a delicious spread of Indonesian food and snacks presented by the parents! But not only this – also two Ondel-Ondel were waiting for them and showed to all the spectators their special dances.

Congratulations for all your hard work and thank you for all the support from various parties to make this a successful day!
